The Playhouse Lab

Renaissance drama in practice at the Workshop Theatre, University of Leeds

You are cordially invited to come and read plays from the English Renaissance—on your feet. We will be reading a series of works from the period, casting every play with students, staff, and friends in an unrehearsed, totally improvised, script-in-hand performance. (You can also just sit and watch the show, but that’s less fun!)

The programme for the 1st semester is usually coordinated with the Level 2 Renaissance Literature syllabus at the University of Leeds. Some of the plays for the 2nd semester are usually coordinated with Level 1 Drama: Reading and Interpretation and Level 3 Shakespeare. if you come to the show, you won’t need to read the play on your own!

No experience is required! And please feel free to bring friends. To sign up to read a part (or two, or three…), please contact the project co-convenors, José A. Pérez Díez and Matthew Blaiden (

All sessions to be held in the Workshop Theatre, Studio 1 (or occasionally Studio 2 or House 10, Cavendish Road; see campus map here).
